Coal Mine Strike
For the coal mine political cartoon, I chose the second picture of the big rock that reads "Threatened coal strike." I chose this cartoon because it illustrates roosevelt's mediation of the strike which shows that his view of presidency as a type of stewardship. The strike by anthracite coalminers threatened to dismember the nation. That's why in the cartoon it shows a big rock that represents the miners and strikes threatening a town. The strike was led by John Mitchell and strikers refused to negotiate, demanding a 9 hour workday and a 10% increase in wages. Roosevelt is seen as the hero saving the nation from the coal mine strike because he became involved and set up an inquiring commission that suspended the strike and the owners got a higher price for coal not recognizing the trade union as a bargaining agent.
